Steps of Obedience

Many times God asks us to step out in obedience. Many of these steps only make sense after we step out. Other times we may never understand the reason behind that step. A week ago I experienced one of those steps that then leads to another step.

I had made the 40 minute drive from my home, in Los Angeles, to my church in Orange County. I had no sooner walked into the sanctuary (where worship was already underway) before I had the urging to leave. It made no sense to me. There was a very sweet aroma in the Spirit but I could not partake. I only knew that I had to leave. As I was walking to my car I was asking the Lord where to go. I received the instruction to visit my grandparents in Corona, which is an additional 25 minute drive. I gave them a call and was able to invite myself over for lunch as they had just gotten back from their church.

On my way there I was still trying to analyze what had happened but couldn't make sense of it. We were having a wonderful visit until my grandmother had a throat spasm/choking fit from what we learned later to be an allergic reaction to an ice cream bar. My grandfather was praying over her and massaging her back while I called 911. By the grace of God she started breathing by the time the paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital. I was then able to be a support to my grandfather while they ran a battery of tests to ensure that there were no other complications from the episode as it had left my grandmother very weak.

Had I not responded to that leading to leave the service I would have never received the instructions for the next step and I wouldn't have been there for my grandparents. His ways are truly higher than ours. Proverbs states that a man plans his ways but the Lord will direct his steps. There is nothing more true than this. May we walk in perfect submission and communion in the Spirit. Many times He will ask us to do things that may seem even contrary to what is accepted to be right but it is not for us to question His ways. I pray that we will all learn to walk with Him in greater closeness.
